Waiting for an Archive to Open: Researching the Role of Chemicals in Postwar Reconciliation in Vietnam
Event box
Join the University Libraries for our first Campus Conversation in Standish of the 2024-2025 academic year!
Dr. Michitake Aso's current book examines postwar reconciliation between Vietnam and the United States, focusing on the wartime use of chemicals and their legacies. It also focuses on ongoing efforts to address the effects of Agent Orange/dioxin, beginning in 1975 with the end of the Vietnam War and the start of reconciliation efforts. In this talk, Dr. Aso will reflect on his research process through the archives he's visited for his project. In particular, Dr. Aso will discuss the Vietnamese Scientists Heritage Center in northern Vietnam, where he worked this past summer. The presence of a private archive in Socialist Vietnam raises important questions: What is an archive? How is it created? Who and what shapes its contents, and how do these factors influence historical writing?
Light refreshments will be served.
