Censorship is so 1984 - Read for your Rights: Banned Books Week Kick Off @ The University Library
Event box

This year, the American Library Association calls us to action with the 2025 Banned Books Week theme: “Censorship Is So 1984. Read for Your Rights.” In a time when attempts to restrict access to books are rising, this theme reminds us that censorship is neither abstract nor historical — it’s a real threat to our freedom to read and think.
Join us for a celebration of intellectual freedom! Event highlights include:
-
Interactive Whiteboards: Share how book bans make you feel and see the powerful responses of your peers.
-
Take Action Resources: Pick up practical tools, guides, and information on how to speak out against censorship and support the freedom to read.
-
Zine Creation Station: Get creative with words, drawings, and collages to make your own mini-publication that celebrates expression.
-
Learn About Banned Books Week: Discover the history and significance of Banned Books Week and why championing the right to read matters now more than ever.
-
Banned Books Trivia Wheel: Spin, play, and win! Test your knowledge of banned and challenged books for the chance to snag fun prizes.
-
Library Resources Showcase: Explore the collections, databases, and research tools your University Libraries provide to help on your academic journey.
-
Meet Library Ambassadors: Chat with our library ambassadors, your guides to resources, spaces, and stories that make the libraries come alive.
Whether you’re here to learn, create, or simply celebrate the joy of reading, this event is for you. Come one, come all, and let’s make Banned Books Week a memorable celebration of literature and intellectual freedom!
