Are you in love with your current book? Casually seeing it? Taking a break? Carrying it around with the best intentions? Wherever you’re at, you’re welcome here. Reading Status: It’s Complicated is a relaxed, come-as-you-are reading hangout and a chance to find your reading community right here at the University Library. Whether you’re always looking for someone to trade recommendations with, want to meet other students who love the same kinds of books you do, or just like the idea of reading alongside other people, there’s a place for you here. And if you’re not sure what to read next, a friendly UAlbany librarian will be around to help you find your next great read!

There’s no assigned book, no expectation to finish anything, and no pressure to participate in any particular way. Bring whatever you’re currently reading, or come ready to find something new. This isn’t a traditional book club. We’re talking vibes, moods, recommendations, and reading experiences—not plots, analysis, or whether you finished the assigned chapters. Share how your book is treating you, find someone who shares your reading tastes, listen in, read quietly, or simply enjoy being around other readers.

Here’s how the evening will flow:

• Arrive & get cozy: grab a drink, find a comfortable spot, and settle in
• Browse & discover: explore the Library’s Popular Books Collection, swap recommendations with fellow students, and ask a UAlbany librarian for personalized suggestions based on what you love (or what you’re in the mood for)
• Read & relax: spend some time reading, skimming, crafting, or simply existing with a book
• Connect (if you want!): chat about your current reading status, what you’ve been loving lately, your favorite genres, or what’s lingering on your TBR
• Wind down: keep reading, browsing, crafting, or chatting at your own pace

Feel free to bring a crochet, knitting, or other quiet craft project to work on while we read and talk. Multitasking is encouraged; participation is always optional. All genres and formats are welcome: print books, e-books, audiobooks, graphic novels, and the books you’re “definitely going to start soon.” Whether you’re deep into a story, trying to get back into reading, searching for your next book, or hoping to meet other readers on campus, Reading Status: It’s Complicated is a space to make reading a little more social without making it another obligation. Come find a book, find your people, or just find a cozy spot to spend some time.

No homework. No pressure. Just good books and good company! 

Registration is not required, but preferred.
