Movie Nights in Minerva is back for the fall semester! Join the University Libraries as we celebrate 20 years (almost 21!) of the film adaptation of the groundbreaking musical Rent. We’re billing this one as a sing-along — singing is completely optional, but absolutely encouraged! Whether you belt every lyric or prefer to sit back and enjoy the movie, everyone is welcome.

Set in New York City’s East Village at the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis, Rent follows a group of young artists and friends struggling with love, loss, creativity, identity, and simply making it through another year. Based on Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning musical, the film explores chosen family, queer identity, poverty, addiction, and the impact of HIV/AIDS while asking what it means to live — and love — when the future is uncertain.

Released in 2005, Rent brought many members of the original Broadway cast to the big screen and introduced the musical and its unforgettable songs to a new generation. Two decades later, its celebration of community, creativity, and living boldly continues to resonate.
